I was reading through the Private hire magazine and read the article about Metro cars.

The thing that caught my attention most was the promotion that they run, 'Fiver from the Driver'. I personally think its a great idea and it would be a great promotion for me to run in my new office, but I have a few questions that hopefully someone will be able to help me with. I have e-mailed metro cars about it but have so far not heard anything from them.

If the people get then stamps and the driver gives them a 'Fiver' does the money come from his takings or the offices takings? If they come from the offices takings, what is to stop them just stamping a card ten times and claiming a fiver from the office? If the driver pays what is to stop the driver saying that the promotion has stopped or they are not using that colored card so they dont have to pay out a fiver? Personally on a minimum fare of £4, ten fares from a new customer would work out at £40 so a Fiver taken out of there is worthwhile to possibly gain a long term customer?

Any clues anyone?

I would imagine it comes from the firms takings, else you might get a driver that never gets asked for a stamp, yet keeps on having to pay out.

Call me old fashioned, but I much prefer the time honoured custom of punters offering the driver tips, rather than the driver giving tips to the punter.

One or two drivers round here though have always offered tips to the punter, in the £10:20 on the meter, call it ten pounds, love way.

Me, if it says £10:20 I ask for £10:20, and often get more.

£3.20 start for 1mile then £2 running mile.

metro have a wealthy entrepreneur who has spent heavily on advertising and promotion to build his business, not sure about the type of customer attracted to the fiver from from the driver offer though.

They operate on a system of fixed fares as do most of the PH operators here. It's so they can use the drivers income to compete with each other rather than their own money.

However I haven't seen the original article.
