Taxi Rank Outage / Joy* (* delete as appropriate) Due to editorial deadlines the following story is brought to you before we know the outcome, rest assured you will / will not* be advised what transpires in the future. However, as taxitalk always endeavours to bring you world exclusives and a balanced view we are sure you will appreciate our best efforts. Cumbria County Council / interfering busybodies* made / will make / might defer* a potentially controversial / well supported* plan for a new rank in the City. The proposed rank has been greeted with strong support / complete outrage* by cab drivers. Those in favour / against* the rank, point to the limited / bountiful* supply of ranking spaces in the City. The row / calm* has provoked / not bothered* world leaders, President Barack Obama has invited Gordon Brown to the Whitehouse, this story is not expected to / will very probably* be mentioned. Pope Benedict has so far declined commented on the story, and is not expected to. The controversy / storm in a teacup* was provoked by a planned 3 cab rank outside a superstore, the superstore has a dedicated free-phone to a taxi company. Up to 80 hackney carriage drivers have freely signed a petition against the planned rank, indeed letters have been sent to the council explaining their disapproval. The 80 hackney carriage drivers, which incidentally is almost the same number as the taxi company have on their circuit, were said not to be best pleased about the situation. One driver who currently picks up pre arranged bookings at the superstore was / was not* heard to comment that a rank at this location was silly as taxis couldn't turn round. We are not aware that any cab driver has mentioned the affect a new rank may have upon earnings of cab drivers, so therefore obviously we await comment on this aspect of the disagreement / harmonious relationship*. Presumably if a rank is placed in this location, which is a public highway, those who currently get work off the free-phone will be slightly miffed as it is possible but not wholly probable that the public will walk straight to the first taxi in the queue. The squabble has divided the taxi trade in the City, the last time the trade was so divided was six months ago when the fare increase was agreed, then last year when plans for a revised age limit on Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles were announced, before that was the year before, when saloon cars wanted on a rank that was previously the sole domain of wheelchair accessible taxis, and the year before, when the trade were brought to a frenzy of worry about foreign drivers coming to steal their jobs. |
