Post subject:  A dilemma

I'm hoping there may be some sensible discussion on this topic before it ascends to the usual heights to be found on TDO!!

A driver, male, has changed his name by deed poll to that of a female and has asked other drivers, both male and female, if they would object if he worked in a skirt. It is alleged that hormones are being taken to encourage the body to change it's physical attributes accordingly. I understand that, in due course, the process may be completed surgically.

Now, the dilemma: How, ffs, would a company for which he/she/it works deal with this situation? What the f*ck should a company instruct it's staff to say on the phone if they are asked? How would you handle a similar situation with one of your drivers?

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :? :? :? :? :? :?

Is he a PAYE driver or an owner driver?

An employee would be able to scream harassment and discrimination if the employer gets it wrong...

Assume, for the purposes of discussion, that the subject is owner/driver.

Many thanks for the sensible comment, Wannabe. I hoped I might get more than one. Obviously, my hopes were misplaced and TDO has lived up to expectations!!!!

This driver is going through the process of a sex change I pressume. My initial thought was what do the LA think of the driver wearing a skirt? I personally would never wear a skirt to work.

That's what one of his female colleagues said.

Well the Scotts Porridge Oats guy has nothing on me, Mrs GBC had to fight her way through the crowd all those years ago. 8)

The person concerned could help his/her own case by using a little subtlety, i.e. not wearing a skirt, and not going over the top, if the vehicle is a full on hack with screens the punters wont even notice, especially at kicking out time

It depends on what they are asked, but, IMO I would think they have to be diplomatic and couldn't come across as being judgemental. If a customer is unhappy about the situation I would think they have the right to say they don't want that particular driver to pick them up :D

also, whilst able to accept request from customers, etc, the base staff would be bound by laws/regulations about discussing this (or any) particular driver

Have a rule in place which says you will not entertain a request just for a woman or man.

Then the she/he can never be offended.

Ask the person concerned (the transitioner) what pronoun they would prefer and ask that person if they have any suggestions as to how an operator (or w.h.y.) should address the issue?

How do they believe the op should deal with customers in this particular circumstance? The transitioner has, in my opinion, a moral responsibility to help address these issues rather than just dump it all in someone else's lap.
