With the credit crunch I think every business is feeing the pinch - except failed bankers who walk off with pensions of £700 000 for - well -failing. 
Driverless vehicles are coming along much faster than most people in the industry realise. Within 10 years almost half of the countries taxi vehicles will be driverless. The government will speed the issue along as soon as the technology is perfected as it has massive environmental implications. |

Only if this credit crunch keeps up, the driver-less taxis will only be parked up as they dont have the work for them. |

If we cannot understand some of the punters on a weekend when they try and tell us where there going,  how the hell is a driver-less cab going to get them home

On another note - You couldn't / wouldn't lock a dog in a vehicle for 12 hours a day without facing charges of animal cruelty - yet we expect human beings to work 6 days a week for anything up to 15 hours a day - crammed in a small working environment in all weather conditions? Something is wrong with this picture guys. When this technology finally arrives , Taxi drivers will then be free to do more productive - healthier jobs as these vehicles become a part of every day life in the 21st century. What do you guys think ? and again... It'll be as useful as a Betamax tape out here in the Stix....no two people ever want to go to the same place at the same time out here. Another possibilty is in the event of a Driverless Vehicle crash only the customers will get Killed...hell..if technology cant stop two satellites colliding in the empty vastness of space what chance have we here on overcrowded earth got of not doing so without the benefit of the MK 1 human eyeball.... |

No and taxi drivers shouldn't have/need to do this either. I simply can't understand why anyone would sit on a rank for hours on end for nothing. Taxi drivers need to start working smarter instead of longer. |

Sorry but this is pie in the sky 1) The technology is a long way from being good enough or reliable enough to be workable 2) customers are NOT going to trust a driverless car 3) the cost of the technology is going to put it beyond the means of most cabbies/ph just the likes of Addison lee Davy Liver etc who would have access to the vast sums of money needed 4) How on earth is the driverless car going to be able to understand punters who are so drunk they can't remember where they live 5) Driverless cars would be a godsend to fraudsters criminal gangs |

Eldder23 1....technology is already in place and ready for use. Main problem will be the revamp of the insurance industry to cover driverless vehicles. 2...customers will take a little time to get used to driverless taxis but after a year or two they will be common place and will then become the norm. 3....very few cab drivers will be needed. Large companies will own the cabs and pay the council to operate them in each community. In some cases the council themselves will own the vehicles and provide the service. 4...exact destinations will be pre-arranged by phone but an ID card installed in a receptor will suffice for anyone unable to state their home destination due to alchohol abuse or other problems. If all else fails the client will get a regular taxi. 5... RUBBISH.

It would take rather more than 5 years to change that, even if the technology were in place to do it. BTW, if it was possible for a vehicle to drive itself safely on a public road, why haven't we seen them doing goods deliveries or other functions which need no more than an ordinary driver's licence? |
