Taxi Driver Online

I am attending the DFT Improving Access to Taxis workshop in Edinburgh tomorrow.I am going there with an open mind and interested to what they have to say .My preferred option is a mixed fleet but i don't think that is suitable for all areas.Did anyone attend the Bristol workshop,and what did you think about it.Also is anyone else attending tomorrow.

I hope loads from the trade will be attending, but fear only a handful.

Ask someone there for me how they would make a mixed fleet come about?

Would they expect those supplying WAVs to be subsidised?

You should ask why all hacks in your area have to be WAVs when there is only a small number of wheelchair passengers so not worth the expense for everyone to have one

Ask them to conduct a survey of how many wheelchair users are in each area, and how many of them would prefer to use a saloon

I'm sure being deregulated and having saloons would go down a treat

I was at the DFT workshop in Edinburgh today and it was a worthwhile trip.

What was very clear is that there is not a taxi on the market that meets all the requirements and that the DFT are hoping that a Wheelchair accessible vechile that meets all the requirements is built shortly.

They also said that a saloon was also a type of accessible vechile and that a mixed fleet was the preferred option for most people.

They are also taken guidance from the European conference of ministers of transport report.

What is also clear is that it is not only the vechiles that need looking but a need to improve kerbside infrastructure,information and waiting areas at ranks.

They also said the Britain was way ahead of its European counter parts in this issue.What surprised me was that Paris has only 48 WAVs .

Good use by the DFT of the word 'hope'.......I use that word everytime the lottery is drawn

is that such a suprise?

the EU comes up with rules, the UK exceeds them, only for the EU euro-states to almost ignore them, result? UK citizens are the losers.

if HMG are so worried about WAV access why dont they provide a specific fleet per county/town for the wheelcahir-bound, with proper wheelchair vehicles not adapted/ramped LTis/Scudos and the like?

I dont recall ONE "WAV" black+yellow taxi in Barcelona last visit, all were saloons

For those with WAVs, in a mainly (and multi) WAV fleet** and area, exactly how many wheelchair jobs a week do you get, has it actually made economic sense for you to have a WAV over a saloon HC?

if the LAs want more WAVs the obvious thing to do would be offer a 100% refund on plate costs in year 1, 75% year 2, 50% in year 3 and 25% in subsequent years




** i.e. not where theres just a couple of WAVs on the fleet

We're at about 50% here and I haven't had a wheelchair job for over 2 years.
