When I was in Germany in the 70s, all traffic lights changed to flashing amber, and all junctions became give way from the left.so just slow down look and go if all clear

 Great idea! If carbon reduction is the aim, While they are at it they can get all the WAVs with 1/2 people in, off the road as well. They are the vehicles that can carry wheel chairs but never do! I do conceed that purpose built HCs tx or mercs are very safe vehicles to work in with regard for driver personal safety.

can you see it actually working even IF introduced, the extra emissions from the highways agency repir teams would outweigh any green savings.....

face it, cows fart more greenhouse gases per year worldwide that all the vehicles on the road...

The best method for reducing carbon would be to turn all traffic lights off at 20:00 hours till 07:00 & all weekend. Saves elecricity and would free up the traffic. The overleigh roundabout in chester is a good example. A roundabout with traffic lights on them. Sometimes the lights fail & the traffic flows better without them. The driver becomes more aware & takes more care. I noticed the 3am bit and remembered The Overleigh. Took this link of a discussion site not about the Overleigh but similar view point. http://www.livesimplicity.net/search?q=roundabouts nasherb thinks: Just to add... I have been a police officer in the UK for ten years and Canada for the last two. I have seen more serious accidents at intersections governed by traffic lights in Canada and the UK than I ever did on roundabouts. take what you want from that. The issue is safety. Are roundabouts safer? In my view yes. Are traffic lights a pain in the back side at 3am when nothings on the road? Yes. Do part time traffic lights on congested routes with roundabouts aid traffic flow? Yes. Should you be able to turn left on a red? Yes.

Verdict. traffic lights have there place but for road safety and general increased movement of traffic. the rounabout wins.
