My tax return has always been done by an accountant, however I have now decided to do it myself (had a bit of an argument with the accountant).

Anyway due to health issues I have not worked a lot during the last year, around 10k miles. I have spent some time reading up on this and asked friends therefore know most areas.

However does anyone have any info on working out the expenses for taxi and personal use? with this I mean say I drove 2k miles for personal and 8 k miles for taxi - should I only claim 80% of the Road Tax + all other associated costs?

Additionally as mentioned this year due to hesalth reasons I will probably break even or even make a lost, if I do make a lost will it be carried over to next year?

Lastly I cannot find my diesel (fuel) receipts, (must of put in a safe place) as I cannot find these should I have a good guess at what I spent? or legally should I only claim if I have the fuel receipts? even though I obviously must of used fuel.

If someone has a sample Tax Return I would be very very grateful.

Thanks

I've always done my own tax return. Only fill in about 5 or 6 boxes in total (on about 2/3 pages) if you declaring under £15,000 it's pretty straight forward.

Sorry Skippy41 but this is not correct, I am no expert in this field either. I just rang my local HMRC and they confirmed that I need to work out the percentage for personal/Taxi and use that percentage for the costs etc.

toots - yep _ definitely will have under 15k.

I am only starting to look into this, and must admit it is fairly straight forward. Feel a bit of an idiot having paid an accountant for years!

for anyone in this position, why not buy a £50 banger and lock it away, then theres no way HMRC can claim you use your HC for personal use is there....

They usually only allow around 5% for personal use. If you take your figures to the tax office they will help you fill in the form (they show you what goes where). They did with me the first time I did it. I'm sure as it goes there is one box that you fill in saying total figure is under £15,000 which then directs you to the last or nearly the last page. On that page at the top you put in the gross then under motoring you fill in your expenses then there are a couple of boxes at the bottom that you fill in with gross, expenses, nett figures. Sign it and that should be that

You'd need to keep it taxed and insured to be convincing!

Ive also claimed £3 per 200 miles meal allowances (50,000 miles a year) , £3000 PA tax free payments to the lad for washing the vehicles (not on PAYE) (saved 22% tax £660?) and night out monies...

i had an accountant for 2 years, watched and listened, then sacked him...

I actually noticed last year on my self assessment form that the threshold was raised from 15k to 30k.

Been trying to keep below 15k for last few years just so I could still self assess.

Forms you'll need to fill in if you're self-employed

If you're registered as self-employed we'll send you a tax return every year in April. This relates to the previous tax year, from 6 April to the following 5 April. If you use our online services, we'll send you a notice - form SA316 - to send us your tax return online.

We'll always send you the core pages of the tax return - forms SA100 and SA101. You may also have to fill in some supplementary pages, depending on your circumstances. For example:

* If you're self-employed you may need to complete either page SA103S if your turnover was below £64,000, or SA103F if the turnover was £64,000 or more.

is there still a reward for using the online SA forms? i think it was about £250

I didn't turn any work down, just kept below the figure, wasnt difficult, I'm a lazy git.

The basic "short" self assessment form has up until last year always been 15k

Customers who will benefit from a Short Tax Return are those with simple tax affairs including, employees, pensioners and the self-employed with turnovers below £30,000.
