No. I know guys who would be insulted at the suggestion they are fecked at 55, and others who were fecked long before that age. If you are unable to handle any wheelchair, get a medical exemption. If it's only the larger people you have a problem with, do a health and safety assessment and refuse on safety grounds. If you just can't be bothered, shut up and get on with it, or just do what anyone else does when they are not up to the job anymore - retire. |

for the life of me i cant see why a driver (thats D R I V E R) should be expected to push a wheelchair whan the user doesnt need pushing any other time (or worse, has a minder/carer who stands and watches) the rules say you must have a WAV, and cant refuse the fare, do they say you must load too? |

I am only 46 & would never push a wheelchair up a ramp NEVER. They council won't pay you when you are horizontal yourself. The correct vehicles for wheelchairs are either the ones they own [paid for out of our taxes] or the electric hoist variants. Why pay ridiculous amounts of cash for a WAV when most drivers never even use this facility. I would however help to assist an electric wheelchair user to enter and secure their chair in my vehicle. I would also assist a wheelchair user to get in and out of a saloon car if they required it. I find most wheelchair users like to be self sufficient and only require the minimum of help. They do have a lot of pride & dignity and a light touch is all that a driver needs to apply to get the job done! |

Most wheelchair users are fiercely independent, and are offended if you try to push them normally, i had a mate of some 30 years standing (well, sitting actually**) who did it all himself, and he had poly tunnels gardening, made concrete fence posts and repaired shoes, with hardly any help, its condescending to assume "they" need pushing... **not a sick pun, but he woulda laughed at that, sadly he passed away 2 years ago aged 65, after being in a chair from age 16 following a pit accident. |
