We have lost 204 service personnel in afghanistan according to tonights news well........... 1979 - 1989 The total irrecoverable personnel losses of the Soviet Armed Forces, frontier, and internal security troops came to 14,453. Soviet Army formations, units, and HQ elements lost 13,833 KGB sub-units lost 572 MVD formations lost 28 other ministries and departments lost 20 men. During this period 417 servicemen were missing in action or taken prisoner; 119 of these were later freed, of whom 97 returned to the USSR and 22 went to other countries. There were 469,685 sick and wounded of whom 53,753 or 11.44 percent, were wounded, injured, or sustained concussion and 415,932 (88.56 percent) fell sick. A high proportion of casualties were those who fell ill. This was because of local climatic and sanitary conditions, which were such that acute infections spread rapidly among the troops. There were 115,308 cases of infectious hepatitis, 31,080 of typhoid fever, and 140,665 of other diseases. Of the 11,654 who were discharged from the army after being wounded, maimed, or contracting serious diseases, 92 percent, or 10,751 men, were left disabled.[65] |

Why are we only told about our troops deaths? Why are we not told about the casualties being inflicted on the opposition? If we are inflicting serious damage to the opposition maybe our casualty figures would be easier to accept. Also why is it that the battlefield is now refered to as the "theatre" are our troops just acting out some kind of play? |

Theres no way it will ever be over 1. The taliban are actually LIKED by a good portion of the population 2. The country is the worlds biggest supplier of poppy/opium/etc 3. The taliban were "OK" when the US supplied em to fight the russians 4. Just like Iraq, a lot of it is "tribal" - and dates back a thousand years 4. The mountains and caves are a natural fortress |

We'll never defete the Taliban, they are born and bred in the mountains, they can live off nothing for months on end, I'd hate to think how many warrens there are in the mountains where the Taliban get from one part to another. You've got to hand it to them they sure are a hard lot to beat. The only way they'll defete the Taliban is to carpet bomb the place, make the mountains collapse onto them, thats the only way to do it I'm affraid. |

the first time they see the effects of a nuke they will crawl out thier caves like ants out a ant hill, or stay and get melted wipe out the poppy/opium/heroin trade and they would run out of funds, with maybe only syria to supply them eith arms |
