Disabled Say Accessible Taxis Hard To Find In NYC

Aug 23, 2009

NEW YORK (AP) ― Advocates for the disabled say hailing a wheelchair-accessible taxicab in New York City is like hitting the lottery.

The odds are daunting. New York City has just 239 yellow taxis equipped to transport riders who use wheelchairs. That's out of a fleet of 13,000 yellow cabs.

The cabs are part of a year-old city pilot program to serve the 60,000 New Yorkers who use wheelchairs or electric scooters.

The Taxis for All campaign wants the city to make all its cabs accessible.

Several advocates for the disabled have expressed anger over the city's push to make the taxi fleet environmentally friendly by 2012 — but not wheelchair-accessible.

The city says it's working toward a taxi fleet that's both accessible and green.
