You've got to laugh.

SOL Campbell has left Notts County, the club has confirmed in a statement.

The 35-year-old defender joined the Magpies in a multi-million pound five-year deal a month ago.

And he only made one appearance for the club, in the 2-1 defeat at Morecambe in League Two on Saturday.

Executive Chairman Peter Trembling said: "While we are disappointed that Sol felt that he could not adjust to the long term nature of the project underway at Notts County, we wish him the best with the remainder of his career.

"We hope that he is able to obtain a place where he can play at International level ahead of the 2010 World Cup."

Campbell was present at the Magpies' official team picture taken at Meadow Lane yesterday – and is said to have trained with his team-mates before walking out and asking for his long-term contract to be terminated with immediate effect.

Campbell, who has been capped 73 times by England, had spent his entire career playing in the Premier League, at Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth before joining Notts.

His decision to drop down to League Two despite offers from Premier League clubs shocked the football world.

His Meadow Lane career lasted four weeks.

Trembling added: "The investment project is on track; we've brought in a lot of new players and resources into the Club, but obviously this is a five year project, not a five week one."

Notts are offering fans who bought a club shirt and had 'Campbell' printed on the back of it a voucher for the club shop for a replacement shirt.

He signed on the 25th of Aug 4 weeks and 1 day ago @ £40,000 per week. That's £165,714 for 1 game of football. I'm doing something wrong here.

I think it was written into the contract that he could leave by mutual consent.
