Don't bring taxis we can't get into Over recent months I have read in the Eastbourne Herald and elsewhere of the provision of additional taxis to meet the needs of disabled people. However, I wonder to what extent account is taken of the actual disabilities from which those people suffer. I became more aware of that when, on arriving at Eastbourne station today, I found that the first taxi on the rank was of the 'black cab' variety. Having a severe walking disability and using two sticks on which I heavily depend I am unable to get in that style of vehicle. Fortunately the next taxi was a saloon car in which I was able to sit next to the driver. The only vehicles I can get in are those where I can back up to the seat, sit down and pull my legs in. This is how I get into the car which I drive. Naturally it is fitted with hand controls. As I thought about my problem I considered other disabled people and wondered how many with walking and similar disabilities, including users of wheelchairs, would be unable to get into the back of a 'black cab'. I hope this problem is considered before licensed taxi drivers are required to acquire more of such vehicles. the vehicles required should be "disabled access" vehicles*, not WAV's as a wheelchair is not the only disability available to the public, but before long they will NEED a wheelchair to get in a taxi.... *with a variety of access options, hi/lo floor, ramps, steps, swivel seats, etc |

Can't work out how those folks get around in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Plymouth, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and umpteen other cities and towns in the UK. 
And soon to be most of them.

I still dont understand how forcing hacks to be WAvs helps the "disabled" when it could be that only a minority are in wheelchairs.... |

It helps wheelchair bound folks by treating them as equals. |
