Lucilo Perez of Miami was arrested for allegedly refusing to pay the cabbie. Lelis Almeira, or reimburse his expenses for the 1,600-mile, 20-hour cab ride, Miami's WFOR-TV reported Monday. Perez has been charged with theft over $1,000, Memphis police said. "He didn't have to do it. He spent all his money for the expenses. He put everything for meals on his credit card expecting to get paid. He's kind of lost faith in humanity. And I don't blame him," said Flamingo Taxi dispatcher Joel Lubin. "This year has been really really hard," said taxi driver Jean Desir, 54, a colleague of Almeira's, referring to how hard-hit cabbies have been in the current economy. "We're not going to promise something we don't have. I don't know why the cab driver and (Perez) came on. That's between them," said Nellie Rose, the Memphis woman Perez had traveled to visit. Perez was being held on bond, WFOR-TV said. |
