we are a newish taxi firm and are looking at taking on drivers for our cars - and would be interested to hear weather its better to pay a % of takings to driver or lease car either by day shift / night shift / or full time ??? any feed back grateful

Offer both to the prospective drivers and see what they want.

Personally I would prefer the fixed rental.

Some drivers prefer % so double shifting the cars is the best idea to get full utilization say 50%, but 33% or 40% for the drivers is not uncommon. Most drivers would prefer renting the car as they can do any shift/any day and use it for themselves when off-duty.

If you go for % be prepared to get ripped off. Some jobs will just not go on the meter or some pick ups won't happen and the driver will pocket the money.
