Hundreds of city cab drivers are learning the hard way not to use their cell phones while driving.

Sources say the city has ticketed 704 taxi drivers as part of a crackdown that began three weeks ago.

The strict new regulations prohibit yellow cab drivers from talking on or even having cell phones or hands-free headsets nearby while the engine is on.

A "three strikes and you're out" policy was implemented January 29, meaning drivers who have three violations in 15 months are stripped of their taxi licenses.

A first offense gets a driver a $200 fine.

Officials with the Taxi and Limousine Commission say the number of tickets shows drivers are getting the message slowly but surely. They also say the policies are needed to prevent accidents and keep drivers focused.

Advocates have come out against the new policy, saying cabbies are being targeted unnecessarily.

We need a New York style Taxi and Limo (PH) Commission over here.

FFS we can,t get them to prosecute pH. Is our cabs enforcement too lenient or are the Americans to stricted. :?

And i kid you not our cabs officer does not know the difference between taxi/pH insurance and social domestic and pleasure insurance.
