My son is moving to Toulouse in April on a one year contract. He has a number of options: 1. Take his 'Y' reg Corsa with him and register it in France. 2. Sell his Corsa here and buy a LHD runaround in France. 3. Take the Corsa for 6 months, bring it back, sell it and buy another RHD car to run around in over there for 6 months, so having a good car to bring back. 4. Run the Corsa for a year in France and bring it back hoping he doesn't fall foul of any 6 month rulings about local registration. Various fora fail to agree on registration process, insurance and time scales for any of the above options and it's just about 'doing our heads in!' Has anyone any direct experience and advice to offer, please? |

Have you thought about buying a new one over here for export, you can get a massive discount A lot of squaddies do this when they get posted to Germany, as long as it stays over seas for over 6 months (I think I am correct on that time scale) there is no problem with bringing it back Then you can get a RHD one driving on the right is easy Skoda are still doing the VAT free deals

I worked in France for a few years in the early to mid 90's. If any of their various kinds of coppers take a dislike to Brits (for political or press induced reasons usually) your lad could be in trouble. Yes, definately follow the 6 month rule. French friends of mine have themselves fallen foul of this when moving from one region (department) to another. I'm fairly cautious and conservative about such things and would rather play safe. hi i lived in France from 2003 - 2009 and took a car i bought in germany with me to france, due to being busy with other things forgot to register the car etc and got pulled over by the cops- they were just curious about the german number thats all and helped explain the process of registration etc. which i can ony describe as :- a total beaurocratic nightmare which took 3 months and cost me about 300 euro so i would not advise bothering for 1 year as it means getting the french MOT - just have up to date mot / insurance and licence at all times (its illegal in france not to have id upon request) and be on holiday or on the way to spain via france or working there for a few months. the police are not very well organised and in a city like toulouse it would be easy to stay under the radar so to speak - as lots of brits everywhere. but be warned the speed cameras on the "periphique " are digital therfore always record speeders and the limit is down to about the 35 mph in places which seems hard to stick to on a 3 lane dual carraigeway. the A62 has plenty cameras too athough it also has plenty warning signs !
