Basically the bottom one is not a proper triangle. The red triangle is 5x2 and the red triangle is 8x3, they are not proportional, if they were the red triangle would be 7.5x3, the fact that the hypotenuse is not straight makes the white space when arranged differently.

What this means in the top triangle is that the hypotenuse is straight, whereas in the bottom triangle it looks straight but isn't put a ruler along it.

I need a lie down now.

Is it not simply the case that the brown section is not sitting on the green section, but is moved down to sit level with it therefore creating the space,the other two sections are then shifted around to maintain the original shape.
