It is alleged that a local driver was attacked and his car set alight the other night. The incident appears to have resulted in a major scrapyard fire although it has not been possible to confirm this so far. In an attempt to galvanise the local trade into some form of self-preservation, we need to try to put together a CCTV package, preferably with some form of HMG/EU subsidy. Can anyone put me in touch with the necessary agencies, government department, EU gravy boats that may lead us down the appropriate road? What can the NTA do? Is there anyone watching this site who supplies and fits the equipment who can offer sensible affordable [recession-proof!!] deals for 60-400 cars? Finally, and the biggest situation of all requiring a solution: How the f*ck do we motivate the drivers into looking after their own safety and, therefore by dint of numbers, get a decently priced deal. |

Nail your Council for some funding, after all they fund the buses to the tune of several hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. The Council have a fund called the livability fund, we got some funding when we had some cameras fitted some years ago. |

Personally I think you need to find out firstly if there has indeed been an incident. If all the horror stories about drivers being attacked isn't enough for other drivers to sit up and take notice then I think you have little chance of getting them to put their hands in their pockets for something they perceive will not happen to them. With regard to the NTA if you are a member you will know what they can do, but, if your not then I don't think they will do anything. I do believe the GMB have good deals available for CCTV for their members but I could be wrong cos I'm not a member. I don't think any union or association (apart from Charles) are likely to do anything if you're not a paid up member. We have CCTV here that is approved by the council and only costs £70 for the basic camera which is adequate for the job. If drives don't think they're livihood is worth that then what can you do. Having said that it depends whether your council will approve the system as ours did. |

Ms. Toots, Can you give me some details of how scheme works? How is it funded? Who supplied it? Please, forever grateful!

We have a operation that is worked in conjunction with Sefton council , Sefton hackney carriage, and the police...( Trojan ) many years ago Sefton Hackney's started to be attacked by young yobs... first it was egg's and then it became egg's and bricks...... a few years ago I had to replace over £2,000 worth of windscreens and side glass, and repaint and repair panels..... there was not a hackney in Sefton that did not suffer damage.... and quite a few private hire vehicles..... obviously these same yobs affect drivers in their private lives as well. It has taken a number of years to put together a system that works.... what happens now. is that Sefton Council rent a hackney off a fleet owner, or single-owner, for two weeks... that vehicle is then lent to the police.. just before mischief Night and returned after the 5th November..... fully insured by the police.... the vehicle becomes a target with police officers in it and a unmarked police car behind...... last year and the year before I did not have a single vehicle damaged... it worked dramatically... and the cost to the hackney and private hire trade was less than 30p a year per person...... |

Please, forever grateful! ![]() It's not a scheme it's just a CCTV camera and you fit it in your vehicle together with signs to let the public know there is CCTV in the vehicle. As I said it was approved by our council but not sure if it will be approved by your council. Quite happy to forward the details to you later when I find out where they are purchased from and you will have to take it from there. |

As you maybe aware, attacks and general disorder towards licensed taxi and private hire drivers have been on the increase on a national basis, regretably we are regularly informed by members that similar things happen locally. We have been advised by the NTA that numerous local authorities in the UK have given funding towards safety schemes aimed to prevent attacks on cab drivers. Funding has been generated through Crime & Disorder partnerships. We are certain any scheme would have the support of both the licensing department and the Police. We would therefore seek an early meeting with yourselves to discuss this matter. Sincerely, CC |

The money has all gone, pi**ed up the wall via the Btec/NVQ scams. CCTV needs to be financed via the fares. 20p a job. |

In an attempt to galvanise the local trade into some form of self-preservation, we need to try to put together a CCTV package, preferably with some form of HMG/EU subsidy. How would CCTV help on this type of situation? The car was presumably destroyed in the fire and any CCTV equipment would have gone up in smoke with it. |

Massive deterrent. Which in itself is a problem as folks with CCTV will never know how much aggro it actually saves. |
