Wigan's Taxi newsletter says 25% of vehicles fail their test. Theres also a snippet about drivers turning a blind eye to the disabled and a section on the Government guidance.

Best wishes

Currently they have set criteria for PH meters, but none for HC meters.

Is it not the case though that a HC is legally obliged to charge no more than the councils prescibed tariff, whereas a PH vehicle can charge whatever they want or indeed have the meter calibrated to whatever they want.

Is it not therefore fair to say that it is within the publics interest to impose terms and conditions to a PH vehicle licence that it carrys a specific type approved meter, which possibly is harder to mess about with.

The HC trade should have had similar controls introduced, I agree, but the council were probably thinking that the "legal" aspect of the HC fare was sufficiant until they tested suitable meters within the PH market, to be introduced to the HC trade at a later date.

We are currently looking to introduce a standard for meters in Gateshead, and it seems as though that standard should be at least callender controlled.

Did you read the councils orders on the shortest possible route?

Call me Mr Silly, but if the shortest route involves rush hour traffic, surely giving the driver discretion is best due to waiting time charges?

Never driven cabs in their lives

PH can only charge a pre agreed fare, i was always under the impression PH had to advise the LA of their charges.

Regarding meters, they dont have to have meters, thereofre whats the point in imposing conditions on something they dont need?

We can charge what we like, when we like, thus it would be impossible for some to give a council a fare chart.

Clearly if you are on a circuit, then it would be easy just to fax one over. But any council that insists on PH declaring their fare structure is working outside of the law.

But when did such a thing as the law ever come into the equation with some councils? :-k
