Derryboy, I think that to have a taxi in Dundee you need one of the proper cabs that can take wheelchairs to get a license.

You can get a private hire license with a saloon (but an Escort could be too small, but it depends on the exact rules in Dundee), but this means you couldn't pick people up from the streets, and so you would have to work from an office/operator.

You probably have to pass a medical as well, and I don't know if your conditions would be a bar.

The insurance doesn't sound too bad given your age, I would expect to pay more.

You probalby won't make much doing days once all the bills have been paid, if you work nights and long hours then you might make a reasonable sum, but it's not much fun.

It might be a better idea to get a driver's badge first and try driving for someone else before you put a car on.

when youve had your license for 2 years, come down here an work for me for 12 months, I will teach you the office, the control, taxiing, taxibus operation, after 12 months you can decide. stay in England, and work your way into management, I will fund you a taxi to stay here and work it off, or loan you the money for one in Dundee

cant be fairer than that.

Thanks :)

Getting a taxi to take wheelchairs should'nt be a problem as i should get help from parents and family :)

I'll probably try for the badge first (does that require the medical and a test asking you local streets?) and then maybe see my dad to see his uncle who owns a taxi or a few about some expierence :)

I own 2 a taxi company and a taxibus operation, doing rural routes, we deal with 2 local authorities, A Passenger transport executive, a rail opperator and several bus companies.

there is lots of negotiating skills to show you

we have owner operators with thier own cabs, self employed drivers who rent cars, and employees who drive buses, that lot have to be negotiated with too.

There is a knowledge test in Dundee (since there are plenty of questions about it on here!) so you'll have to pass that before you can drive, whether for yourself or another owner. If there is a medical then you'll have to pass that as well.

I think driving for someone else first is a good idea, since if you are ill and can't work then you'll probably still have to pay fees to the office (could be up to £100 a week) and/or repayments if you buy a wheelchair taxi, so if you can't work it might all get on top of you.

It may be more tiring than you think, since if you want to earn a crust you'll have to work quite long hours, and the job itself is not as easy as a lot of people think.

But if you drive for someone else then if you don't work then you won't be paying out any money, but on the other hand if you don't work regular shifts then many people will be unwilling to take you on.

well like all small buisnesses we struggle one way or another.

but we are watched over, and always have a tap for help, thats the secret.

and if you take up our offer, you could have a lifetime of struggling success to, believe me I do every job in our firm, and the ones who need managing most are the managers.

My illness is worse when i do more work which involves a lot of walking etc. I could drive all day and be fine dont know why it is suppose it's just my weird illness :)

I just hope i'd pass the knowledge test my memory aint that great though saying that i got 100% in my theory which was all from memory/common sense.

Is it easy to get example questions? Definatelty have to see my dad's uncle :)

Thanks :)

Yeah.

I've struggled all the way through my life since getting my own house etc. but family has always been there which has helped me a lot.

As long as i could earn £100 a week taking away cost's i'd be happy as it'd be an extra £100 than we have now :)

your aiming a bit low, I would hope you did nearly trebble that, just remember one thing, [edited by admin] I said I wouldnt encourage you!

you neen no matter what to put your takings on the table and be strict with this no cheeting or you cheat yourself.

tips, put them in your pocket they are yours!

one third bellongs to the taxi, thats for maintainence, licensing, and renewal,

one third goes in the bank for a rainy day, unexpected bills and a good holiday, you need them on the taxis, and on those holidays you study the taxi market there, that makes it a legitimate buisness expense

the other third belongs to your family, for the homes upkeep.

if you work hard you too will build a company

keep off the booze and work and donr cheet on these rules and you will be a struggling success,

Thanks for the tips :)

I dont drink at the moment only an occasional drink every couple of months but that tends to be a few beers in the house :) (though it's a very good tip know a few people old school friends who's dads were taxi drivers and would drink all there pub money)

Definately makes sense putting away one third for repairs as there very costly and doubt i'll be able to get a friend to do it as the longer the cars off the road the less earnings i get :)

Also for a holiday :) for our annual trip to Yorkshire :D (though this year it's Newcastle) and trips for the kid and fiancee :) and maybe hopfully enough to buy our own house :D

How much do people earn roughly a week on cost's?

I did'nt think it would be that much but if your self employed and taking on average £5 a fare and getting 3-4 fairs an hour it would certainly add up. My dad's uncle seems to do well he's done it all his life.

Thanks very much for the tips :D

Hard lines on de-couraging me earlier dont think much'll put me off :) Even the fear of having to drive around the local druggies/neds and idiots around here wont put me off.

well your holidays need to be cheaper and more educational, you will learn nothing in Newcastle (even less in Gateshead) you need to study the Canarie Islands.

but I have seen taxi firms go down the pan to drink and gamboling.

what I did when I started (many on here will be boared) is I set myself targets to be hit without fail, and upper limits,

behind my visor I kept times of bingo finishing and the like, trains in national express coaches in, youth clubs and built my way up.

dont tell anyone your take, you put yersen at risk its a profesion treat it like one and if a taxi is booked charge everyone friends family the lot, if its important to give mum a free taxi you must put it in out of yer tips.

you start on time and finish on time

goodluck but you should still travel the world.
