Reason I ask I've been served a letter from a solicitor to remove it as it similar to our largest firms, style similar, content completely different?

I would simply ask your licensing officer if there is a problem with your top sign and then tell them to bo11ocks.

The type and style will be copyright, but to the manufacturer of the sign.
So long as they made it and you haven't copied the manufacturers design, you will be ok on that score.

I'm assuming the problem is the company logo on the sign, rather than the sign itself?

Design rights are pretty flimsy and copyright has to be unique. It also depends who was there first. Personally I'd seek proper advice before I removed anything

Sounds as if a competitor has complained about 'passing off', which is a trademark sort of thing, not copyright.

It's basically about doing something that might mislead customers into thinking your business is another business.

Have a read of the following. It blabbers on about goodwill and the like.

That's the proper goodwill, not the imaginary HC stuff in restricted areas

Nope if anyone asks you to remove it under copyright law ask them to show you the Patent Pending, also the UK patent if they have one.

As a Hackney Plated Taxi, the only roof light you should have is one with the word 'TAXI' & the design of the roof light must be approved by your LA.

Reading between the lines, perhaps your LA or LO has a 'thing going' with a certain manufacturer of roof signs.

Not aspering castersions if you drift my get!!

Out LA stipulate the size, design, colour and typeface of top signs.

That would seem to be the root of the problem in this case.
