Post subject:  How do you work out Airport fares?
Hi folks, I wonder if anyone can help.

I am a student, and whilst I wont bore you with the details of my project, it has posed a question that you might be able to help me with.

Is there a standard way of working out airport-run fares? Do you just work out the mileage, or is it on a Zone basis?

Any insight would be most appreciated

With airport work, in my area, it's usually priced slightly lower than the competition. :sad:

All firms have set mileage rates for out of town work, but if firms based their airport fares on those rates, they wouldn't get too much work.

You then have the specialist airport firms, that will do the work even cheaper. Partly because they can arrange take-ups and pick-ups to coincide. :wink:

Then at the bottom of the pile you have the un-licensed vehicles that will do it very cheap, because neither the vehicle nor the driver is checked. :sad:

Thanks very much for the insight, it's a great help :)

One other thing - when you call a minicab office, how do they work it out so quickly? I asked for a quote and there was no sound of tapping into a PC or working it out on a calculator... they just gave me a price within a few seconds. Surely they don't have a huge chart on the wall showing every combination of town/village and airport?!

Most firms only price from their areas, so they will only have prices for a few start zones. So really the girls on the phone should know the prices off the top of their heads, for work to the airports.

For non-airport long distance work, they will use a mileage chart which will make the calculations take a little longer.

You said that last week, you even said you was going to visit me somewhere in Manchester. The fact that I haven't been to Manchester in over 25 years, doen't really matter. :shock:

If it's a hackney carriage then/taxi then within the licensing area (normally the local authority area) it will be subject to the officially set tariffs.

Outside that area the HC can negotiate a higher fare.

Minicab fares are generally unregulated, but as Sussex says they will normally have set prices for longer runs to airports etc, and the telephonists will know these off the top of their heads.

So how long have you been spouting this nonsense now Nidge?
