Post subject:  Letter from the council this morning

Morning all. I have just received a letter from Plymouth City Council this morning inviting  me to a car check next week. Are these things spot checks, with the cars picked out randomly? or has someone reported my car for something?-not that there's anything wrong with it!

Does every driver have their car checked once a year(apart from the MOT!)

What sort of things are they going to be checking? is it an mot? If they do find things wrong with the car, am I of the road until such things are fixed?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but fairly new to the game, and got me a bit worried this morning.

To me I think you have been reported maybe by onother driver, what for it could be anything, dirty car, plate not fixed, accident damage, got tv set in cab, speed camera gear, primus stove, etc etc. or a customer could have reported you, maybe they couldn't see the meter, your dash lights not working, fuel /exhaust smell in vehicle, they got dirty from the door getting in. you have something in your car to which you shouldn't have, the list goes on,

usually the council leave you alone and you never see them till test time or half yearly mot, it won't be a mot inspection, they will make a bee line straight to the nature of complaint. probably get a 7 day put it right ticket, or a stop notice only if something is dangerous, firstly, don't worry it's all in the game, as far as you are concerned you are doing everything right, arn't we

reminds me of a while ago, the council was doing night time taxi checks with police, social security, customs diesel dippers, and ministry of transport, they pulled this PH driver and asked him to go down to the council workshops straight away for vehicle check on the ramps, the driver said ok and off he went, but he never got to the council yard, he went home and had 2 days off while we all know he was getting his car fixed, he phoned the council and said sorry he didn't turn up at the ramps he felt unwell at the time, and went home, he told them, he then asked is it ok to come down for that inspection now

on closer inspection, the letter does say 'selected for a randon spot check'. Obvioulsy they might put this on all letters whether random or not, but I can't see any reason why I'd get reported? My meter is clearly displayed on the dashboard, car is alwys clean, can't see any obvious problems. Hopefuilly it is just a random check. I'll let you know, appointment is next monday.

This is what the taxman says as well [a random check] not picking on you but your name came out of the hat, regards.

Never heard of any drivers being called in like this before unless they've been reported for something. That's what it sounds like.

But yes, it does also sound like it may be a random check. You'll just have to see what they say. As long as you present your vehicle in tip - top condition and everything is as it should be, then you should be OK.

Let us all know what happens though.

To true Yorkie,
having done this job for 20 years plus or so, the old guys who stuck together have gone, moved on,retired or passed away, we had nothing like this then, and now we have a new breed of taxi drivers, the back stabbers, there are now to many new taxi drivers recently who have come into the job and have had to finance themselves to get in on the act, some of us are getting in their way, and they will find a way of getting you off the road, we have the same trouble in our area.

If the letter has been sent by another taxi driver, or taxi drivers, I don't think it's anything as malicious as that. Although I don't see anything funny about it, it's probably just a joke to them.

What is the point in a "spot check" if your given a weeks notice??

Now getting stopped by two coppers, a licensing officer and a guy from the vehicle inspectorate when you dont get prewarned and when your half way through a shift is a spot check!
