Last year I drove for somebody whilst my cab was off the road, since then I now drive on my own. Whilst driving for former company I noticed that the 5 seater I was driving had a different rate on it's meter and I took a regular customer to his place and it was 40p dearer than normal. As we got our annual inspections due shortly would you notify the council that the meter wasn't right or would you let it go?

If you are a Hackney then you will be on a tariff that is regulated by your local licensing council. Private hire can charge what they like.

I would send them an anon e-mail suggesting they check it.

Firstly a 40p variation in a job is not unusual, mine ticks over more than that at one traffic light.

secondly why do so many these days see grassing to the authorities as a first resort? Surely a quiet word with the guilty party should be the first step, that's only polite

Oh and if you really do have to grass someone do it openly, anonymously would just be cowardice.

Because it's the law.

Or do we ignore laws now? Do we now ignore the touts? Or is that too high up your moral scale, but overcharging punters isn't?
