Last week the sweet serenity which invariably envelopes Maryport was rudely dispelled by the depredations of a burglar. On Thursday morning excitement and alarm prevailed when it became known that the premises of Messrs GRAVES Bros., pawnbrokers, had been broken into and a quantity of gold articles abstracted. In the stilly night a daring thief had mounted the roof and effected an entrance by removing some slates. A suspect booked to Carlisle by the first train on Thursday morning, but otherwise the whole affair was involved in mystery. A person captured at Workington is believed to be implicated. This sensation had not subsided before it was succeeded by a greater one on Saturday. The police of Maryport are to be complimented upon the exceedingly smart capture of five Scotch shopbreakers. Descriptions of the alleged culprits were received on Saturday morning, and within a very short time the men were "spotted." The police, however, calmly awaited their time, and ultimately captured the gang on the Maryport Association Football Field. The plan had been ingeniously organised and reflects considerable credit upon Inspector NOTMAN and the men under him. It was generally supposed they had been responsible for "that little affair" of GRAVE Bros., but this supposition was groundless. I understand that the members of the Association Football Club are very sore about the time selected by the police for the raid. For one of the prisoners was proving himself a valuable acquisition to the club. He was playing a magnificent game, and it is averred that but for the interference of the police Maryport would have won the match. The law, however, is inexorable. It cannot stay its hand to minister to human gratification. I hear that FRASER has subjected himself to a penalty for leaving the field of play without permission! The point certainly has been raised and one official particularly is in a quandary as to what should be done under the circumstances. It is difficult to understand how such a question could arise.
