I read the private hire car guidance notes, it requires the vehicles should be under 5 years old, but as I can see so many old private hire cars are running in th city, like year 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003 etc, is that possible to use some old vehicles for private hire as they are perfectly and shinning body, and pass the MOT? Also, is there requirement for the milage? expecial for airport service, some cars are 200,000-300,000milages, but they under 3 to 5 years old, engines are still runing good, it that possible to pass the private hire MOT? |

I would imagine you local rules insist on any newly license vehicle being less than 5 years old. Once licensed they can be used for as many years more. Can't say I've come across an upper mileage limit, but they may be because you can clock any motor for £50.

Each council has its own rules on vehicles and testing, and since there's 400 or so UK councils then rules can vary enormously. |

Yup, our LA introduced age limits but when challenged as to why there were still so many ancient vehicles on the road the reply was the age limits only applied to when the vehicle was first pitted/licensed. In effect you could licence a vehicle one day before the age limit and then keep it on the road for as long as it was able to pass pit tests, be that a further one year or twenty. |
