Earlier this year myself and 5 or our drivers signed up with a company called STS training in Mansfield for the NVQ we were told that they had funding and if we signed up there and then we would get our NVQ We had a visit from a very grumpy bloke with the drivers spending about 45 to 60 minutes each filling in all the paperwork and were told that we would be contacted by the assessors shortly nothing happened for 2 months in the meantime our council sent us details of another firm that had funding but as we thought we had already secured the NVQ through this firm we ignored it On monday I got a phone call from STS apparently they DIDN'T have funding and we have missed out on the opportunity to get the rest of the drivers through the NVQ they are instead offering us a BTech which involves drivers attending classroom sessions etc. which is not what my drivers want to do several other local firms who signed up with other providers at a later date got their NVQ assessments ! We are now faced with possibly having to pay a massive bill to get the NVQ's which our council will make compulsory at some point in the near future I am very unhappy about this and smacks to me of this firm signing too many up for NVQ in a bid to fill their BTEch places |

I am glad that you posted this because we were looking at putting our drivers through the NVQ after hearing the adverts for STS training on the radio. Thank you. |

Ahhh good old STS. I wish you had contacted me before you signed anything. As for the Councils making it compulsory I don't think that will ever happen, there's been to many fly by night companies set up. |

Been compulsory in my manor since the start of the year. When pressed the council say it's voluntary and they can't make you do the course, but you won't be issued a badge without the NVQ ! |

Numerous councils have......Bournemouth were one......and I'm pretty certain there's a few other councils out there where its a contition of application to pass either the NVQ or BTEC. Whilst there's fly by night training companies out there....what about those taxi / ph companies that jump into bed with them? CC |

Charnwood have made it compulsary and they have actually refused to renew some drivers badges where the driver has not done the NVQ. |

I'm going to stick my neck out here.....IMO the fault of the courses is the funding.......people are getting something for nothing so thats what its worth. CC |

CC Like the owner round here who got £250 per driver he put through the test. He ended up putting 50 drivers through. |

BTecs are only funded for new trade entrants. If your drivers already have licenses and are working, they can't do a taxi related BTec. |

And to top it all today they have sent me an email requesting documentation which was supplied when we first signed up which makes me wonder what they did with the originals and all the paperwork we signed originally |

CC Do you think these particular courses would have more value if the drivers had to pay for them? I agree entirely with the your point of percieved value, but, I wouldn't be happy if I had to pay for an NVQ because there is actually no real value to it cos there is no substance within the NVQ or Btec. Having said that I'd rather sit in classroom and do a Btec than fanny about with an NVQ |

I think if drivers were paying for them they'd have more value to the driver. I think companies getting 'kickbacks' for signing their drivers up for courses has more to do with companies greed than the value of the course. I would go as far as to say the entire training scheme towards the taxi and private hire trade has been a monumental waste of tax payers money. But, I did say that from the start.
