Got my PH badge early December last year. Tried for my Hack in May and failed. Took it again today and passed. As our LA issue dual badges I am considering changing my TDO name to either 3 Jobs ( Insurance, PH and Hack) or maybe nowiamahack2. Can't decide.

Best guess there are 400+ streets in the LA area and for HC we have a 20 question knowledge test and have to get 15 correct. The tester picks a pick up point and a destination and the applicant has to describe verbally the shortest route. With my c**p memory that is something of a challenge.

Anyway, onto a new adventure.

Good luck mate, and I bet within 2 weeks time you are thinking why oh why did I ever go PH, and they will start to annoy the hell out of you when you realise what they are all about these days, gone is the friendly office where all the drivers knew each other and customers became friends, now it's Tesco mentality and no rules apply if they get in the way.

I suspect people go PH after reading the tales of doom from the hackney trade.

Of course in a delimited area drivers will have a choice over not just what they drive, but what they own.

Thanks for the good wishes Doom. I suspect I am somewhat spoilt. I live and drive in a pretty afluent area. There has been penetration of the trade by "non locals" but locals are still very much the majority. Having driven PH for a year I have to say I enjoyed it tremendously but that may be because our area is much like

a fair bit of the time.

Possibly one of the big differences here from what I understand in other parts of the country as far as PH goes is that around here getting onto a circuit is difficult and expensive. Plus there are no "barons". The largest number of vehicles owned by one chap around here is I think 14.

Anyway, looking forward to trying Hackney. The vehicles I drive are on a circuit so even if the ranks are quiet I still have the chance of "radio" work. The chap whose car I drive has recently got a very rare free issue Hackney plate and a new Peugeot Premier is on order.

Final thought, I hope this weekend is better than last cos it was an absolute shocker!

Picked up my new Hackney badge on Thursday. A regular hackney driver was ill over the weekend so was offered the chance to do my first hackney shift. Quite pleased with what I did, eve got a non payer to boot! That will teach me that when an attractive young lady falls into the car absoluted bladdered, get the money first! Also managed to upset some drivers on one of the ranks cos I didn't know the etiquette for the overspill "rank" and just tagged on the end of the line when it moved forward. Oh well!
