Pedestrian jailed for throwing things at taxi

A TAXI was the target of a whole range of objects – from rubbish bins to a flower pot to PVC pipes – one night in August.

Ali Houdini, 36, a pedestrian who was upset that the vehicle had stopped too close to him, vented his anger by throwing the items or using them to hit Tan Wee Ping’s cab.

The cab had stopped along Lorong 6 Geylang to drop off a passenger at around 3am on Aug 21.

Houdini – who was sentenced to six weeks in jail and a S$2,000 (RM4,897) fine on Tuesday – opened the taxi door and started arguing with Tan, 48. He punched the cabby’s face twice.

After closing the door, Tan called the police.

While he was driving away, Houdini, a technician, took PVC pipes from a lorry parked nearby to hit the side of the vehicle a few times.

Not wanting to let him escape, Tan followed Houdini in his taxi. Houdini then hurled a rubbish bin at it.

Tan continued to trail Houdini as he walked down the road and into a small lane.

There, the culprit threw another rubbish bin at the cab. After that, he picked up a flower pot and a metal drain cover to hit the taxi.

On Tuesday, he admitted to punching Tan and the rash act of endangering the latter’s personal safety.

In mitigation, Houdini told the court he reacted the way he did as Tan had used the vehicle to follow him.

District Judge Eugene Teo said that even if Tan’s driving was very poor, Houdini’s reaction was out of proportion.

He said it was not acceptable for Houdini to behave in the way he did.

The judge agreed with the prosecution that the rash-act offence was aggravated. — The Straits Times / Asia News Network
