If a hackney carriage is working and not displaying the front licence issued by the council and the top sign has been removed, is the vehicle and driver still covered by the insurance or would it be void?

I think you would have to ask an insurance company that one but id I remember correctly you are not allowed to ply for hire without a toplight but i don't think it is illegal to carry passengers without one e.g. a booking to the airport

Yeah, they're mainly local byelaws and conditions I think......but saying that some insurance policies do say the vehicle must be operated in compliance with local conditions and byelaws, thats when they get certain drivers for no insurance.

I think the insurance cover will still valid.

But this is a by-law offence that needs to be dealt with by the council, unless they have authorised the driver to do what he is doing.
