I had a regular Client who dissappeared into the ether, aint seen him in yonks! Today i found out why, The Garage that Collects and Drops off his Lease/Hire car for servicing during his trips away has extended their service from simply collecting his car from his home to garage are now collecting his car from home and then running him a further 20 miles to the Station...they then face a 30 mile return journey to their depot with his motor. Result is Im missing one Client! I guess their must be something in it for a Garage to be sending a Vehicle on a Car transporter or by using Second Driver on a further 40 mile round trip that they need not be doing. My question is.....If they are offering this service of taking a client to the station and charging an additional cost for it then they are entering the realm of Hire for reward and should be LA licenced to carry out such work. Any opinions on this one welcome? |

Imo they are still getting a reward even if they don't charge him. Also if they are doing it for one customer how many other customers are they doing it for? |

When the contract hire exemption was repealed in England as I recall it the Scottish one remained as it was. In fact I think this applies to contracts of less than 24 hours duration as opposed to 7 days as it was south of the border. So in effect if the garage is only using the vehicle to transport one customer in a 24 hour period then it might be OK, but still worth raising with your council's licensing department. But on a more general point with the contract hire exemption in England having been repealed, where do the likes of the AA and RAC stand if they're driving customers around? |

As my work straddles the border I guess I might fall foul of some law in a near off land where I pick up clients in but which are booked through my Scottish address and phone number. Oddly enough my North Northumbrian English Neighbours also enjoy my same Scottish STD code, Postal Code, Postal service, Scottish Doctors, Scottish Ambulances, Scottish Fire Brigade and Scottish hospitals. etc...Seems like other than a difference in the law they have more in common with Scotland than they do with the rest of England!! |

CC Didn't the DfT issue some mega-documents of guidance and what not, the kind of thing I can't be bothered reading these days. But the kind of thing that Sussex probably reads
