I believe in set formal rules, a child has its mums surname, if the mum is married she will have taken her husbands surname in marriage, hence the children will have dads surname, this the convention and traditional way, and theres nothing wrong with it, it works, and has done for 100's of years
When children arent even sure WHO their fathers are, let alone their names you have a recipe for the downfall of the fabric of society, this is obvious from the events of the summer when anarchy took control of our streets, aided and abetted by "unrest" amongst the "underprivileged" amongst us

My maiden name is on the official documents now but there is nothing stopping me using my previously married name if I wish to do so. My eldest daughter was born before I was married she had my maiden name, then a change of name deed followed after the marriage. When she got older and because she shortened her christian name she asked if she could use the surname on her birth certificate because her initials were BO
No problem for her to start using my maiden name if she wished as a change of name deed has no legal binding until a child reaches 18 and then they have to properly change their name legally. There may be perfectly legitimate reasons why this girl is known by 2 different names
