Cabbie stole phone

On December 29, at about 1:30am, I took a black cab from Sheffield city centre to my home in Rotherham.

When I arrived home, I realised I had left my wallet in my house and told the taxi driver I would go inside to get it and pay him. He insisted, however that I leave my phone with him as security, which I did.

As soon as I entered my house I heard the taxi drive off, taking my iPhone along with it.

When I called my mobile, the driver gloated: “I’ve got your iPhone and there’s nothing you can do.”

I then called the taxi company but since I had stopped the taxi in the street they had no record of the trip.

I have reported the matter to South Yorkshire Police and they admit there is almost no chance of recovering the phone and that this type of incident, while uncommon, is not unheard of.

I called my mobile company and the phone is blocked and now it is of no use to anyone.

I just wanted to make readers aware of this incident. Besides the theft, it is a serious betrayal of trust.

One is aware of unscrupulous minicab drivers and the inference is that black cab drivers operate with higher standards: in this thief’s case it is clearly not so.

Please, if you are in the same situation as I was, take the driver’s number before you leave your property with them.
