Taxi Driver Online

Well I know it's always worse at this time of year, but is trade etiquette getting worse?

For example, the other day a driver I was on friendly terms with went sailing past me to get back to the rank before me.

Not really that unusual, but later on he came up to me and started chatting away as if nothing had happened.

I mentioned what had happened earlier on, but he seemed to take offence and effectively said I was fair game and seemed to think that I was the one in the wrong for remonstrating with him.

Not that drivers overtaking you is that uncommon in my manor, but at least most of them don't have the brass neck to treat you like you're still their bessy mate.

I agree, round here the drivers are the same always overtaking going back to the rank, never let you out of a side street even though I pull over when I'm approaching the rank to let them past as a thank you for letting me out.

I think your right Dusty.....there's cab drivers here that take great, almost perverse pleasure in cutting other drivers up.

here in the cotswolds has got the same the other day a cab accepted a flag down right in front of the rank where 10 cars were sat when i approached him he said the council had said to him a customer can take any car anywhere this is creating bad feeling amongst the drivers lots of us that used to have a natter now dont talk to each other

Ironically an awful lot of the 1847 act appears to be in place to prevent disharmoney on taxi ranks, I wonder how much has been considered as necessary by the law commission?

So is a hack supposed to follow another back to the rank regardless of speed or traffic conditions, if the lead hack stops for a paper or slash is the following hack obliged to stop and let him continue in the lead?

I think the theory is to stop arguments and fights when taxis eventually get back to cab ranks.

It's a rare ocassion to see them racing each other to get to the rank first here. Same goes with PH, we have to do a U turn to get to one of the offices in town and if a driver does a U turn they always pull over if there is another driver coming the other way into the office. They do the U turn to save the large roundabout trip, so I guess they figure if they'd gone around the roundabout they would have come in behind the other car anyway. We may have rank etiquette here but when it comes to picking up fares that have booked it's dog eat dog. As we have mixed fleets on the circuits here if a taxi drops off outside a venue and somebody approaches them to say they rang for a car they'll say it's ok jump in I'll let the office know regardless as to whether a vehicle has been dispatched or whether it's actually the correct office

Did you post this in the wrong thread or are you just being silly?

What is the point of "Racing" to the Rank, as no one knows which Customer will want to travel 2 miles or 10 miles, the first or the second.

Yes, it can backfire on the shyster, but on average he has to be better off because he gets a job quicker.

I've been shafted by these clowns and had to wait an hour longer or even more as a consequence, and it's no consolation that the queue-jumper got an £8 job and I got a £10 one if he got his an hour earlier.

Driver etiquette has never existed in this area it is dog eat dog out there and has been for a long while.


Rank etiquette is a luxury only affordable in those areas which restrict numbers

In my limited experience.

When Customers come to the Rank, they all seem to do so at about the same time, almost like passengers getting off a Train or coming out of a Bingo Hall. Not necessarily in groups but almost as if, from their various places, they had looked at their watches and said "Twenty past. Time to go home!".

Obviously, that's not always the case but, it seems to happen with amazing regularity.

Are you saying that there are no unrestricted areas with better etiquette than restricted areas? I very much doubt that.

Tell me, how does a driver paying £150 per week just for a plate (in York, say) contribute to upholding etiquette?
