Thought I would share this important information for all.

Was going to post on a Brighton Taxi website, however after a quick visit it appears to be an ego trip for its host, and somewhat a "promotional" site for an illegal CCTV unit.

Brighton Council has made CCTV compulsory from April 1st 2012. After looking for a system for myself I became aware of the stick on so called CCTV systems. After seeing the promotional pictures I suspected that there maybe legal issues of such a unit. So I contacted VOSA for their views.

The reply was unequivocal, if anything is attached to or obscuring the windscreen with a diameter greater than 40mm (in the swept part of a screen)it would be considered to be make the vehicle unroadworthy.

As such, the driver would be fully liable should a serious accident occur. I also had a response from a retired Traffic Police super, he confirmed that in such an event he had no doubt that VOSA inspectors would pick up on this. To add more flames to this (if it was needed) a Vehicle Tester told me of a case were a young lad was convicted for manslaughter after a fatal with a cyclist. The accident investigator largely attributed the gadget to the accident.

some LA's insist on window stickers inside the windscreen which ive thought could cause issues in the event of an accident

mobile phones and satnavs on sucker mounts must be in the way too

I did bring this up with the tester, he said that units like data heads although can use suckers are largely rested on the dash. Meaning the angle/seating height tends to block the bonnet as opposed to CCTV units that have to be mounted high up on the windscreen in order to cover the rear seats. This makes the unit more at eye level....ie obscuring drivers view of the road.

The tester also said it is quiet common for testers to simply remove the offending item in order to carry out the test. Which is why on collection people find the fluffy dice sat on the passenger seat.

I think it's best that no-one in the B&H trade takes any notice of what some people, who should know better, spout about CCTV.

We have heard from some down here that you can't have audio. Lies.

And we have heard from some down here that you can legally fix the CCTV to the centre of the windscreen. Yet more lies.

Now if you were seeking "HONEST" VOSA approval for a CCTV unit which photo would you use

Amazing how a website can suddenly change picture resolution and angles to suit its needs....I wonder, what will VOSA say!!!! #-o

A case of 'now you see it, now you don't'. [-X

I wonder how many of those drivers he sells his system to, he will actually tell that VOSA will deem their motors 'un-roadworthy'.

And that VOSA will demand that they tell them which testing station has unlawfully passed the vehicle? [-X

Yes I haven't mentioned that a Technical VOSA Officer and the Taxi inspection division wants details of testing stations passing vehicles with these fitted. 8)
