Tanker drivers earning £45k threatening to strike - and thus bring the country to a halt - because they're feeling hard done by?

Thats the problem in todays Britain...once certain union backed groups of employees become that unions weapon of choice they start thinking they are Invincible and indispensable...Infact they are neither but our government is to soft to sack the tw*ts and so lets them go on buggering up the country for the rest of us in pursuit of their own selfless greed.

Once these People get on to a wage level that is probably double what they are actually worth they become legends in their own minds...and of course the union encourages their beliefs that they are indeed superior to the rest of us just to keep their weapon of choice primed and ready to strike.

I say sack them if they strike and in the process put our fragile national recovery at risk and endanger our livelyhoods...its nothing short of treason to hold the country to ransom at times like this.

It would not take much to train any lorry driver to stick Hose "A" on to Nozzle "B" at a filling station...Im sure the filling station staff would keep them right if doubt arose.

Bunch of To**ers....

Ermmmm I wouldn't like to drive a petrol tanker with a few thousand liters of fuel sloshing around, It's not just about driving it, there's the unloading the fuel into the tanks at the garage, it's not just hook up and turn the taps on, there's the vapour to get rid of, there's the earthing strip that needs to be earthed in the right place and if you unload the fuel to fast you run the risk of an explosion.

You see it's not about driving.

Why sack em? We need them on our side at this moment in time. If they want to strike for more money for carrying dangerous chemicals they deserve it, sooner them carrying it than me.

There are many more far more dangerous cargoes on the road and I doubt those drivers carrying them are earning £45K

I had a run down to Alnwick on Friday night with 2 drivers who had run out of hours.
They mentioned the tanker drivers strike, and how the government would act.
But allegedly if the government do bring in army drivers to break the strike if it goes ahead, all other union member drivers would block the refinerys thereby preventing fuel from leaving them

That would be illegal under current strike legislation.

So what you're suggesting is that because they have a good salary they don't deserve to keep the terms & conditions they originally agreed to. In effect you suggest that if the salary is good they should be grateful. If the drivers are on £45k what are the managers earning? The union guy is on £100k

Anyway there's no need to worry because the government have 300 drivers from the army ready to take over from 2000 tanker drivers so we shouldn't see any shortages

Before I pass any real opinion I'd like to see what the terms & conditions are that they say are being slashed

Quote:
Unite claims tanker drivers ‘work in an increasingly fragmented, pressurised industry’ with ‘corners being cut on safety and training in a bid to squeeze profits and win contracts’ and describe it as ‘a clear case of a predatory industry putting its greed before the wider well-being’.

seriously though this strike is about the refineries controlling their costs to keep the price to the consumer down why should we all pay an extra 1 to 2p a litre on our fuel to ensure the terms and conditions of a priviledged few. Elsewhere in the economy workers in many other industries are having to accept pay freezes and end to final salary pensions and many other rights we are now paying the penalty for aspiring to too high a standard of living compared to our competitors.

At the end of the day Britain needs jobs and a stable economy that means ditching greed and developing a culture of invention, entrepreneurial spirit and graft or we run the danger of becoming a 3rd world country the tanker drivers are probably losing much less than many public sector workers have why should one group of workers be protected from the changes which are having to happen today

I can see both sides of this.

1 - they earn good wages so why strike

2 - the job is being erroded by rule bending

If nobody says anything, eventually the tanker driver ends up being on min wage for driving a bomb, ask the bin men how their job went from being a well paid one to complete minimum money once the contracts got handed out to private companies, so I don't think the 45k pa wage is the issue, it's about making sure everything stays relative.
