A taxi driver has had the smile wiped off his face after being prosecuted for tax evasion.

Rakesh Varma was hauled before magistrates after being spotted by an eagle-eyed official in the Chronicle - taking part in a scheme to help cabbies crack jokes to customers.

Varma has been a taxi driver for several years, most recently since September 2001, without declaring his income.

The investigation began following article in the Chronicle in June last year which featured the father-of-two taking part in the Chin Up comedy campaign.

A member of staff in the Newcastle tax office noticed the article and carried out a computer search on him.

The 48 year-old, from Jesmond, was found guilty of evasion of income tax at Newcastle Magistrates' Court. He received an £800 fine plus £250 costs.

In addition, he must also pay HM Revenue & Customs more than £4,500 plus interest in unpaid income tax and National Insurance contributions.
