I signed up for the army the day before the Argies invaded the Falklands but didn't start basic training until it had all finished. And I left a month before Saddam invaded Kuwait.
Part of me wishes I could have been there for both and part of me was glad I wasn't.

It was posed to me the other day if there was another WW that our potential soldier's that are currently chav's would simply allow a walk over, I don't agree myself I think when told that it's get dug in or get enslaved etc by another country they will rise out of the track suit and into the combat's and do us proud, same thing with those that will be too busy selling insurance etc to join the effort, once you show them what will happen when conquered they will be more focused on making munitions or fighting than worrying about lost profit's,

Anyway as I suspected/expected there hasn't been any uptake other than yours Sasha and I thank you for replying as well so it just show's you what a soldier actually goes to war for, some time in the future those that don't care will be powering their car's with fuel that came from the South Atlantic, had MT simply surrendered it to Argentina those future resources would not be coming this way and we'd be even more of a door mat than we are seen to be now.


CC, I'm very disappointed to have not seen you comment, I had you down as the sort of bloke who would have something to add to this.

One of the lads I grew up with, Peter Fitton, died in the Falklands. He was in 45 commando and was unfortunatly killed by some of our own troops whilst resting. and another one was on HMS Coventry when it was hit although he wasn't hurt.
I always remember them.

This is really P poor y'know, just two replies, what a lack of respect land we now are, can't be bothered to acknowledge those who died for the country nor those that made it home who have to re-live it every day in their minds, not even a reply from Chris the Fish, I would've thought you'd have a few words being as the Hoe has a good monument plinth on it in remembrance.


You lot simply have no idea what went on down there, 75% of our ships got hit in some shape or form, one of our medic's tended both British and Argentinian casualties and got awarded top medals from both us and the enemy, all with ONE Chinook helo to lift wounded and supply the still fighting, quite a few Chinamen died there also, yep that's right, they do Laundry duties for the RN.

Absolute disgrace, I'm too old now to go active, but I am going to ensure no one close to me ever fights for this country again because people aren't worth dying for anymore, this is typical of today, nobody says thx and everyone expects the earth for nothing, so if your speaking Russian in 50 years time tough [edited by admin]. you get what you pay for, and yeah there are medals in my family so we've done our bit over time.

Doom my Father was Bomber command in WW2 on lancs as a 20 year old he saw over 50% of his mates die to stop the **** Scum but he and I would totally disagree with your views on the Malvinas Iraq Afghanistan Cyprus Aden Kenya the occupied 6 counties of Ireland and elsewhere where the butchers Apron was flaunted and still is in some these areas.

However he made the point that he put his life on the line to enable such disagreements to be debated, he often quoted Voltaire I think it was who said " I totally disagree with you opinion but I am prepared to die fighting to enable you to exercise that right and express that opinion " or something similar?

Anyway lets hope for the end of all wars and bloodshed as John Lennon said" give peace a chance"

I was a young army cadet at the time.
We spent tuesday evenings protecting the church hall from argie paratroopers!

We were glued to the telly for the whole conflict.

With all due respect to your father he had a totally different set of people to represent, those he fought for were worth fighting for, Iraq etc is another thing, there was no liberation of Iraqi's like they want us to think, the only man in office in the USA who objected was Colin Powell, funny how he was the only one out of the lot of them that had been a soldier before, I'm a big advocator of those that start wars should participate on the front line in them, guess how many wars there won't be then eh, however when the Junta took the Falklands they had no right to, they are too far away from them to consider it like the Isle of Wight is to the UK etc, N Ireland basically is/was justified in the fact that religion's were killing civilian's, I don't like the fact we had to do it as it's not the way a country should have to be ruled,

Anyway I'm sticking with it about no more of my bloodline for these causes, I'd gladly die if I thought the people I was to die for were worth it, but basically they aren't,

Anyway I'd like the thread to be about saying thx and remembering fine people, just like everyone out in Afghanistan right now, rather than a debate on the rights and wrongs as such, however I do thank you for your reply and it is appreciated.

No-one has taken the opportunity to slate Thatcher for sending our forces to the Falklands, that surprises me.....

True, but again it's not the purpose of it, much as I didn't like her she didn't have much choice tbh, where she could've done it better is in the planning, slip ashore unseen, no not her, sink a ship for the sake of it.
