Hi, I'm just looking for some feedback on a new taxi firm idea I'm working on. I was thinking about mainly doing contract work, such as airport runs, school runs and weekly shopping trips, and was wondering if this would work? Or would it be better to concentrate on the "casual" customers who just ring when they need one? Or is a new taxi firm simply not a good idea? I'd be grateful for any feedback, cheers! |

Little acorns grow into big trees mate, your not going to get rich in the first year nor the 2nd year for that matter. Make a good name for yourself and be prompt and reliable. Don't go doing cheap runs because you'll only upset the local drivers and when you do have to put your prices up the customers will moan like feck. Cheap fares attract the low lifes. Have 2 cars the other one can be a back up in case anything goes wrong with the first one. Think of a good name that's going to put you in pole position in the Thompson local or the Yellow Pages, something begining with AAA, or Ace or ABC or A2B, Abba Cabs, people read from the top of the page and being in Pole Position gives you that head start. |

You'll never hit the Mother load unless you pick your way upwards through the poorer quality strata first. |

Not sure your idea is much different to what most of us do anyway. But why can't you do both, if there actually is a both?

Cheers for the replies, the point about the cheap fares being a bit detrimental when prices increase makes sense, so in reply to the point about doing both, would it be worth it? Or would focussing on longer/contracted work attract those customers, develop a reputation and bring more business in that way? |

I'd say develop a reputation and bring in more business, the buisness you bring in will pay your bills at the end of the week. |

Thanks again, it does sound like what I'm trying to achieve with the business, just a regular custom every week as opposed to relying on casual work which may or may not be there a lot. |

Regular custom ~ Cloud Cuckoo Land. If there was any, likely, someone would be onto it already. School Runs would be useful, but probably destroy the vehicle. Otherwise, charge a fair fare, be pleasant & polite, with a clean & tidy car. Expect to lose money for approximately 2 years, unless you can trade as a Hack somewhere. |

Mine started at £60/day, progressed via extra kids+inflation rises to £87, and after losing 1 kiddy i am now loaded for 10 miles in the morning and again in the afternoon for £70/day, 6 days a week, if (like saturday) im not needed but without 24 hours notice I can still invoice for itI dont think thats too tardy.... Plus its FOUR years work and paid 14 days from invoiced by BACS Ill take that over the drunks, runners, spilt chinese, hairy dogs, etc, etc |

It's not that I necessarily was aiming to restrict it, just want to focus on regular types of work, and I'm just taking advice on whether to take on casual work or whether it's just not worth pursuing. |

Well "wannabeeahack" haven't you got some old 'phones! Have you got a trimphone? Can you do the ring tone through pursed lips? Have you got any without curly electric string? |
