I was thinking about mainly doing contract work, such as airport runs, school runs and weekly shopping trips, and was wondering if this would work? Or would it be better to concentrate on the "casual" customers who just ring when they need one? Or is a new taxi firm simply not a good idea?

Cheers for the replies, the point about the cheap fares being a bit detrimental when prices increase makes sense, so in reply to the point about doing both, would it be worth it? Or would focussing on longer/contracted work attract those customers, develop a reputation and bring more business in that way?

You'll never hit the Mother load unless you pick your way upwards through the poorer quality strata first.

School Runs would be useful, but probably destroy the vehicle.

Thanks again, it does sound like what I'm trying to achieve with the business, just a regular custom every week as opposed to relying on casual work which may or may not be there a lot.
