It is nearly impossible for train companies to make money with all the ridiculous charges that they have to pay network rail. I was told recently that if you want to meet a network rail employee to discuss anything lineside related you have to pay £250 before the network rail person will even consider turning up !!!

If the Railways were taken back into Public ownership fares would be 20% lower and the service would be better.

Dunno about Better....I seem to recall a heap load of [edited by admin] service and late running Trains the last time it was Publicly owned.

That was down to starvation of money by the Tories.

Maybe the losses are due to the fines they get if the service is late, I've been led to believe they are fined by the minute, not sure how accurate that is tho

Now, I hold no brief for the present lot of Rail Companies but some people seem to be viewing the past through rose tinted spectacles.

British Rail was one of the most inefficient and wasteful Organisations that this country has ever had. Both the management and the workforce were wasteful and idle, many were corrupt.

Of course there were some lovely stations, hard workers and trains that ran on time.

There were also major accidents caused by corrupt purchasing policies, undone maintenance work caused by inter Union demarcation disputes, and badly designed Rolling Stock that was allowed to carry on working because the replacing of it was on no-ones Job Description. It needed replacing, maybe what we have is not the best, but it is streets better than what we had.

Yes there are a lot of fines especially for the freight companies I was told recently by a driver that the penalties are such that they won't even consider some freight traffic and it has to go by road because the risks of getting in the way of a passenger train are too high ! and if that happens the fine is more than the profit margin

Post subject:  Re: East Midlands Trains!!!!!

In 1975 the British taxpayer subsidised the railways to the tune of £550 million approx

In 2012 the taxpayer pays £12 Billion which is mostly paid to Network rail for maintaining and improving the network BUT some of it is paid as revenue support for the running of services and some to TFL for the underground

BUT I believe that Virgin trains ( Branson) as well as East Coast , First great western and some of the companies running commuter services into London Actually pay money to the taxpayer not receive it

does that explain it a little better toots !
