You may have seen my other post and realise that I'm considering getting into the taxi business. Hoe much does the meter cost to buy and have installed? Also, does it just work out your fare or does it keep a record that you can audit? |

OK so it keeps a log? Does that mean that if you were less than honest with the tax man they can see how much work you've really done? |

it keeps a log, the reading can be untrue to what you have done or actually earned, ie. mileage, running about getting bits and bats, meter tests, forgetting to turn off meter, how many times have you done a job got back to the rank and the meter is still ticking over after you forgot to shut it off on your last job. passengers get in the cab, put meter on then you find they only wanted advice or the place they wanted was just round the corner a few yards away. The tax man knows or has clever ways of finding your earnings to a certain degree, a double driven cab is a different story.have never known the taxman going for the meter readout. some of the older meters you can clear the stored log, just a matter of knowing which buttons to press together. |

As highwayman points out, the meter isn't necessarily a good indication of how much work you've done. They all keep total figures, but as far as I know they can all be zeroed, although highwayman seems to think otherwise. I use mine to keep a shift total, and zero it at the end of the shift. But I've never heard of the taxman showing any interest in the meter, probably because there's no real control on their use, at least from the perspective that he would require. I think the mileage is what the taxman looks at in the main, assuming you are unlucky enough to be subject to an investigation. |

How can they tell by the mileage though? Especially if you only work a couple of nights a week? |

No doubt they'd have to approach a part-time vehicle differently from a full-time one, since in the latter they can make reasonable assumptions about private mileage etc - for example, I use my vehicle as my private car, and the taxman disallows around 5% of my expenses because of this. So if you were doing a big mileage doing other things (such as driving to gigs) then presumably you would have to account for this, and the remainder would be divided between your personal use and your cab use. As far as I'm aware most of the time the taxman will just accept what you declare, but if you are subject to an investigation and your figures don't reconcile then you could end up in trouble. |

mick same pillock on another site is taking the p*** out of you for asking this question. that wally apparenty never had to ask a question when he started. still at least hes no longer driving cabs. he been demoted to a bus driver. he should be ok because they can pick up anywhere. unlike cab drivers who have to keep to there own areas. unlike mr perfect.

I think the problem is that he didn't understand the question, as he demonstrated often enough on here. The good thing is that we now don't have to waste time trying to explain it to him. |

Well the site spends a lot of the time abusing us and spreading falsehoods about us, so we don't like to give it the oxygen of any more publicity. But apart from constant abuse, misrepresentation and just plain nonsense, one of the reasons we banned the author of the post below was his way of abusing and bellitling those who are new to the trade come on to discussion forums and ask perfectly reasonably questions. By they way, because we know a bit more than him he thinks we're solicitors  , hence the references 
Cant use a meter? ask a solicitor! There are tradgedies in this trade, but one bloke has a solution ask a solicitor. He has been on taxi driver online to ask them how to use a meter and how it works! Kin ell this site has turned from a University to a primary school, we have jokers asking how much the take should be how to get licenses now how to use a kin meter> Taxi Driver online site is now the bloody pitts. people are taking the [edited by admin] |

I think that in future anyone concerned with what's happening on other forums should contribute on there, not contaminate this forum with it. There are still one or two more subtle troublemakers on here, but I think it's a lot better than without some of the rabble who used to post. The number of posts on the site may be down a bit, but the 'lost' posts were mostly garbage anyway. But the number of hits has increased since the big clear out, so this suggest that more people are viewing the site, so that's positive. |
