Both of my minibuses went in for their MOTs today. Now as we all know, you can't MOT a vehicle more than a month from the due date if you want to preserve the anniversary date. So a vehicle that has an MOT that runs out on 28 September can't be MOTd until now. However, mine both failed on very minor items. Now the first available retests at the VOSA testing station where they were tested is not until October. How on earth can this be possible? Simple, the VOSA sites are only working 2 days a week. What a crock!

That's not acceptable, surely you must be able to complain to someone about it?

Your MP might be a start.

You need to find a decent garage for a start, the above is not acceptable.

Minibuses have to go to VOSA not an ordinary garage. The Watnall testing station is one such place. The MOT costs £111.00 and a retest is £44.00

Take it to another area, but I was under the impression that all MOTs are carried out by a VOSA rep

Then you would be wrong. HGV and PCV test are carried out by VOSA directly. Some tests are carried out at "approved premises" but they are carried out by the VOSA testers. If you use one of these centres you also have to pay a "lane fee" on top of the test fee.

I have been able to book a retest at the VOSA site in Leicester on September 5th for both vehicles. The original test was at Grantham.
But yes, if I could not get the retest done at Leicester, the vehicles would be off the road until they passed.

WTF is a 'lane fee'?

Try Redfern Travel on Debdale Lane in Mansfield Woodhouse, they have their own testing facility for buses and take in the general public work to.

They may have their own testing facilities but the tester still has to come from VOSA for the MOT.

A lane fee is the fee paid to the garage whose lane is being used by VOSA to carry out the MOT. Basically VOSA test the vehicle and the garage gets paid a fee for allowing them to carry out the test. The government are saving money by not having to use their own premises to do the tests.

Let a HGV/PSV fleet workshops book it, my guys do 40 tests a week, so they get some leverage, they just book slots and turn up

did the vehicles not get a chassis steam clean and pre-test?
