My day job as an insurance broker pays my mortgage. Never have and never will advertise or reveal identity on the forum, but I could do with some info please. For reasons I can't figure out, our phone has virtually stopped ringing from drivers asking for quotes and I thought I would ask for some feedback that might give me a clue. Would appreciate answers to the following, please pm if you prefer: 1) At renewal, how many brokers do you ring for alternative quotes? 2) If your renewal premium is similar or lower than last year would you still ring around? 3) Do you get phone calls from brokers that know your policy is due touting for business? 4) Would you automatically use the internet to seek quotes? 5) Would you "quote and buy" taxi insurance on the internet? 6) Are you happy dealing with a "call centre"? 7) Do you have sales reps from brokers accosting you on ranks or at base offices? If yes to 7, do you keep their details and ring later?9) Do you worry if the insurance company being recommended is an obscure one? Any help gratefully received, heres hoping for a busy weekend. Well, we can hope! Thanks 2J |

Hi 2 jobs, I put enquiries on the internet back in August when I returned to work. I was inundated with quotes, all more or less comparable. However, due to the excellent service I've received in the past (and since!! ), I decided to stay with my local broker with the 'London Borough' company; this despite the premium being slightly higher. No doubt the calls and E mails will start again next year as I approach renewal but, unless something really drastic happens, I can't see me changing. I get a personal service that, to me, is worth the extra premium. However, the taxi trade being what it is, I would guess the great majority will shop for price and consequently end up as a number in a call centre database. |

Q1 usually about 3 or 4 from adverts in PHTM Q2 probably not Q3 yes usually Swinton plus a few others send junk mail Q4 No Q5 No Q6 well even a small broker is a call centre of sorts Q7 No Q9 Not really but I would want to know a little bit about them There are a number of brokers i will not deal with because they have created major problems for me these are MCE notorious for taking your money and NOT actually putting you on cover and supplying you with a certificate of insurance. 2 insure taxi absolute total sh1tsters I wouldn't reccommend anyone touch these with a bargepole and choicequote (this is going back a few years now but) I had to take them to court to get a proof of no claims out of them I hope you don't work for any of these and by the way I used to ask Swinton for a quote BUT they are always the most expensive so i don't bother now |

1 ) At renewal, how many brokers do you ring for alternative quotes? I don't! My renewal is 14th November annually. Today I have emailed 80 insurance companies, brokers, intermediaries and contacts on an email address list that I have built up over the last 6 years and supplied them with 5 pages of details that they need to provide me with a quotation for my forthcoming year’s insurance cover. They are instructed to reply in writing by email or by post. I only speak to the 4 or 5 most competitive premium providers about 3 days before my renewal is due to check the fine points, like level of excess, payment arrangements, etc.. This is my method and it works wonders for me on price and all I do is update last year’s details and send the email. If you have not received an email from me between 0735-07.41hrs today and would like to quote me for my forthcoming year’s insurance, then please PM me with your email address and I’ll send you my details for quotation. You will also be added as No 81 to my email address list for my annual taxi insurance quotation. 2 ) If your renewal premium is similar or lower than last year would you still ring around? I don't phone around, but I always, always, always seek alternative quotations every year! I never wait for my insurance renewal quotation and I have yet to receive this year’s renewal quotation from my existing broker. Having dabbled as an insurance intermediary myself between 1985 and 1999, you know as well as I do that one of the tricks in trying to retain next year’s business is for insurance companies, brokers and intermediaries to provide the renewal quotation to existing clients as late as possible so that they don’t have the time to shop around for cheaper prices. With insurance quotations generally being valid for 28 or 30 days, there is no excuse for insurance providers not to offer insurance renewal quotations in a timely fashion. 3 ) Do you get phone calls from brokers that know your policy is due touting for business? Occasionally; they are asked for their email address and I add it to my insurance quotation email address list. 4 ) Would you automatically use the internet to seek quotes? No. My method works very well indeed and saves hours, days and perhaps weeks of time. The insurance companies, brokers and intermediaries do the work, not me. 5 ) Would you "quote and buy" taxi insurance on the internet? No. See answer to No 4 above. 6 ) Are you happy dealing with a "call centre"? Never, they are so impersonal and don’t get the time of day from me. They either supply me with their email address and I add it to my list for annual insurance quotations, or they are bid ‘goodbye’ and I end the phone conversation. 7 ) Do you have sales reps from brokers accosting you on ranks or at base offices? Occasionally, they are asked for their email address and I add it to my insurance quotation email address list. 8 ) If yes to 7, do you keep their details and ring later? No. See answer to No 7 above. 9 ) Do you worry if the insurance company being recommended is an obscure one? Yes, if the insurance company is in contention on price. I research them on the Internet and two years ago I declined to go with the cheapest insurance company because they did not have any track record in Hire and Reward insurance in the UK and their head office was not based in this country. |

The guy who I used to insure my own car with was a good £250 dearer than those online but with him sponsoring my local football team I decided to stay with him, that was until my renewal came through a few years ago which was £500 more than the previous year, this was with 15 years NCB and no points on licence. I did some quotes online and they were coming in under £300 fully comp for the year. I rang to cancel my policy and the lady on the phone asked me why? I told her and she said hold on a minute I'll get back to you. She came back on the phone and said we'll match what you've already been quoted we've had a look at another company for you. I said, "why didn't you go with them in the first place instead of hiking my premium up"? She couldn't answer me. I cancelled it and went with Churchill. |

In addition to the details listed above by brummie... any notifiable medical conditions, are DVLA aware, any restrictions on licence and best to add ALL convictions, motoring and other, from birth the thing is they probably wont up your premium, but if its on your application then the insurers cant use non-disclosure to weedle out of paying up in the event of a claim |
