Danny Alexander dismisses triple dip recession suggestion

Published on Sunday 9 December 2012 11:51

THE UK’s chief treasury minister Danny Alexander has dismissed suggestions that the country’s economy is heading into a triple dip recession.

However, the Lib Dem cabinet minister warned that there would be “more squeezes” to come in public spending as he defended the UK government’s austerity measures.

The chief secretary to the treasury also repeated the Lib Dems backing for a mansion tax and said the proposal would be in the party’s manifesto at the next General Election.

Mr Alexander said that if the Lib Dem “don’t succeed” in winning support for the move within the Tory-led coalition government that “it will be part of our manifesto at the next election”.

He went onto warned of that there would be more “difficult choices” in public spending as he defended last week’s autumn statement from Chancellor George Osborne.

Mr Alexander said: “My job is to find ways of making savings and I’m looking at how we do this. “We’ve made significant squeezes and there are more squeezes to come.”
