Hi All I have just joined the forum as I'm looking into joining the trade and thought I better introuce myself to you all. I have been reading the site for a week or so just to get the feel of thing and thought it was time to join officialy I have recently be made unemployed and at nearly 40 I'm finding it hard to get work so thought about my own taxi service. I live in Penmaenmar a small village in North Wales and there are a couple of taxi companys in our village and about 10 miles up the coast is Llandudno a very busy sea side resort. I was looking into the LAs guid lines on approving a licence and I think I'm being a bit dim here but they have Hackney Carrige price list and a Hacney Driver price list. I am presuming was wondering if I had this right the price list is so you can get a licence to drive and a licence for your veicle. Another issuse I have is that on the Vehicle conditions it has to say wheelchair accessible in order to have this I will need one of the new euro taxi or E7 as an example but I cant understand how the other taxi firms get around this as some only have saloon cars and estates. I have decided to go down the Hackney licence rather than the private hire as the cost is the same to get the licence and the vehicle licence but with PH. With a hacney I can pick up of the street or a rank rather than a PH, but I also need an opperator licence so people can call an office. This is just another expence I dont think I could afford as well as employing someone to man the office. Last but not least any hints tips about the business and trade would be appriciated. P.S. Welcome aboard  You seem to have understood the licenses pretty much and with regard to the need for a WAV I can only assume, which isn't good at the best of times, that the saloons were licensed prior to the need to be WAV, it could well be that just new licenses need to be WAVs. I'm sure those with more knowledge will be more than happy to help. Good luck in your venture

At a guess I would say your local licensing area has changed their vehicle policy sometime and the ones you see have grandfather rights. Hi (Or Bore da) Whats your Licensing Authority (or LA, as we will call it to save typing) Ref below, are you looking at local "taxi's" (hackney) or "Private Hire", as vehicle requirement per LA and per plate are different whats your vehicle age limit for a new plate (1st grant)? You dont need an office, you can run from home (and off a rank - if you have one - if your plated hackney) Lol (Bore Da = Good morning) but hey thank you for making the effort unfortunatly I dont speak welsh that well, just understand it better. The LA is conwy county council www.conwy.gov.uk. I would put links to their pdf files but this computer won't let me access the web site for some reason or other. (Old and knackerd still runing old version of xp) The first grant vehicle is no older than 5yrs and is hackney spec. I would prefer the hackney as then on Friday and Saturday nights I can wait on the ranks and pick up from the pubs and clubs of the street instead of waititng for the call to come in with PH, more so because I would be new to the trade want to make sure I can pay everything off as the vehicle will be on finance of some sort. Just want to say a quick thank you to the people who have replyed to me so far with your advice it is trully appreciated and a welcoming community

At least 5 years old and a WAV, (for a hack plate), all fairly standard, the sallon hacks youve seen could hangovers (older plated) or from your nextdoor LA (visiting?) fees look about normal get a badge first, maybe get some experience just driving and watch out for the speed taliban on the A55 |

I would suggest applying for a badge first and then see if you can drive someone else's vehicle either on a split purse arrangement or a wage to learn the area and how the trade works. You will need to learn when and where the best work is etc. I would doubt Paenmaenmawr has got a lot of local work but maybe there is a bit of work 2 and from neighbouring conurbations late night work usually centres around places with nightclubs daytime is often to and from Doctors hospitals railway stations etc I wish you luck but this is a very oversubscribed trade there were a couple of members on ghere from chester perhaps if you PM them they might know people further along the coast with the local gen |

It a strange place to have a "WAV" requirement for all hacks as the trade must be a bit sparse, even Bangor is bigger, but the 5 years rule does mean you could have 2008 Lti, Vito, Transit, E7 etc, or Renault Traffic, but always ask first |
