It would appear in the past that some mini cab drivers in London have been a major cause for concern, with many working illegally. The following case in 2003 highlights the extent of the problem however, one might be right in thinking that by licensing mini cab drivers the problems would be cut dramatically but will they?

I think the problem will always be there, but one assumes until the PCO sort out all the touts etc then it wont go away.

Let's hope that fewer and fewer scum bags get licensed, but even with a CRB check some get through the net. Especially if they have no traceable history. =;

It might be worth our Lords and Master considering checking licensed drivers the same way as they are now checking licensed doormen. No traceable history, then no license.

It will probably have some effect, but since these problems have become so ingrained then to sort them properly would take a Herculean effort that probably won't take place.

The same could be said about law and order generally.

There lies the greatest problem.
The majority of London Minicab drivers are foreign nationals.
How can you trace a persons history if they come from Iraq or Nigeria.

You can't.

Now if the PCO insisted that applicants had to have been resident in G.B for a number of years that may cut down the chances of the serial sex attackers getting 'in', but obviously not all.

I suspect the London Minicab trade will still be hitting the headlines on many more occasions to come.

Good points GBC, but we can't forget the cab trade's former opposition to minicab licensing, so the PCO were unable to insist on anything, never mind any residency requirement.
