next door neighbour of one of my drivers has recently put his own car on the road plated for our district (he already has a full time job but wants to do taxi work as well  ) he is working for a company based in a town 14 miles away in another licensing area which if he is working on a PH basis is OK as he is plated hackney BUT he is apparently covering local work in our town taken by this office in a neighbouring district. I thought at present that you had to operate a number based in the district your calls are coming from which is why we do not have national cab firms at the moment or am I completely wrong on this ?

nope, you need to be plated for the area/LA where the calls are ANSWERED but then a car can be sent anywhere

i.e. a Manchester city centre caller going to (say) Leeds rings a Leeds base and a Leeds plated car picks him up

assuming all are PH of course

Assuming only PH plates are involved...

so its the question of where the phones are answered then?

how has he got a PH ops licence for 2 areas unless he has 2 bases?

He is operating legally.

The operating sections of the 1976 act only apply to PH, not hackneys.

In other words hackneys don't need to worry about all this cross border stuff.

Both areas are NOT restricted therefore all vehicles are plated Hackney my question was how is he allowed to trade in another area without a seperate number for that area my understand was that that is not possible under current legislation or is it ?

its a whole grey area, let me explain, yes and no if the call is answered in one area it has to be a vehicle plated in that area, unless its a hackney carriage. Way around this - easy just state/ advertise that none of the vehicles used by company x belong to company x and all work is sub contracted out.

Don't you keep a record of other company's around the country in case of an emergency such as a break down on an airport run?
