Heard from my broker that around the country, taxi drivers are being caught up in claims scams that are contributing to the increase in insurance premiums

TAXIS are being targeted by gangs doing the following:
1. Taxi drivers are picking up passengers - before the passenger leaves the vehicle at the drop off point they make a call to another car.
2. As the passenger opens the door, the other car just contacted is passing and then hits the taxi door
3. The passenger then goes off and does not leave their details leaving the taxi driver to provide their insurance details.
4. Then a damage for; injury claim and hire of another vehicle is submitted by the other car and its Passengers, as a result of the created claim. This can run up a bill of several thousand pounds to your insurer.

The road traffic act says that the vehicle insurance pays for anyone getting in or out of a vehicle. This means that effectively drivers are responsible for an accident that is not their fault, NCD is reduced at renewal and premiums will go up. Through no real fault of the driver, the taxi is off the road for repairs. With more of these incidents happening it's why everybodies premiums are increasing

If its happened to you if you've got CCTV installed make sure you keep the footage and contact your insurance company ask them to investigate fully. If you suspect anything involve the police. Alternatively make sure all your passengers get out from the kerb side.

at one time a claim only needed a registration number, see a taxi and claim!

the is fix to this

keep child lock on road side door an when someone no get in straight away say.....

in or out mate or better still get out an remove person from side of car an say when you really ready get in

That would be illegal. Passengers must be able to open all doors from the inside.

Yep CC I would like to know as well, living as I do on the south coast, when it is very windy I put the child locks on and advise people they will have to wait for me to get out to open the door for them, never been a problem in 41 yrs but maybe I have been breaking some obscure law all this time!

i think grandad could be right an it will be an obscure law but when it come to pay for £600 door to fix an punter have no money who can argue you did anything wrong maybe if both door is locked it problem

I think it's just MOT/pit test law. When the vehicle is tested all doors must be openable from the inside and outside. If a fault develops that prevents a door from being opened later you'd probably be in breach of the test regulations but I don't think the use of child locks constitutes a fault.

I read it somewhere that for taxis and private hire vehicles you can't use child lock because the passengers must be able to open all the doors from the inside. I know that all the doors are checked at our vehicle inspections to make sure that they open from the inside.

I'm sure you will catch me up one day! and I could no doubt tell as many tales as Uncle Albert, trouble is many people would not believe them! :shock: :shock:
Back to the thread, I found out that on the Phaeton when I lock the rear windows ( can be done separately by the way) it also locks the door preventing little hands from opening it!

You don't need a Phaeton for that, someone's Mondeo does that as well. :roll: :roll:

I recall there's another 'turn ignition key on x number of times then press a button' trick that locks a mondeos doors once a certain speed is reached, they're still openable from the inside though.

All our Meganes have this feature. There is a door lock button that you can press to lock all the doors from the outside but if you hold the button down for about 20 seconds it activates the motion locking so that the doors lock automatically when you drive off.
