I welcome parking revampThe latest proposal regarding routes and amended parking fees in Weymouth has been very carefully investigated by the traffic and parking management and relevant councillors.
Congratulations to the officers and councillors who have worked so hard.
At last we have a major innovative revamp of both traffic and parking regulations to look forward to.
Visitors will no longer feel penalised. Indeed when the changes are in place Weymouth may well be a much more cheerful place which will be good for all.
There is a slight possibility of a financial drop in parking revenue. However the numbers of vehicles parking will increase due to a sensible pricing system and ultimately the council's coffers will fill again, and businesses in town will undoubtedly become more viable as a result of these excellent decisions.
Regarding private hire vehicles (taxis) a small change in regulation/bye law allowing all taxis to park in taxi bays may help alleviate the current parking (lack of spaces) situation as I understand currently only hackney licensees are allowed to do so, one rarely sees these spaces occupied especially during the business day.
It is a masterstroke offering reduced fees in car parks, but only if the charges are really low, the proprietors must have a fair and just reward for parking off the streets, a peppercorn rate would be appropriate. This will end the total frustration that the traffic wardens feel when unable to issue a non compliance ticket because of evasive measures currently taking place within the town.
I am sure that there will be many locals and those on holiday who will rejoice at being able to walk along or sit and observe the movements of a working port without the hindrance and fumes of passing vehicles most of which are hunting parking places alongside the harbour.
