If it's too short? The reason I ask this guys is that I got into an argument with a taxi driver on the rank the other day as he was tip car and refused a job on the Basis of it being too short (bout 1/2 mile) I ended up doing it,he said to me 'never mind what local councils says it is in the rules (what rules who knows) that a Hc driver can refuse any fare. I replied with 'Bollocks' lets go see the taxi inspector-he said nothing to do with him,it's a throwback to original days etc etc He wanted to place bet on it! Should I take him up on it? The fare was not drunk,violent,smelly abusive or anthing |

Take his money. He can't refuse because it's to short a fare. (That's called cherry picking BTW) |

The other week I had the same situation - got out of the cab and gave the driver an ear full letting him know that it was not going to happen on a regular basis! Okay you are thinking then why did I take the fare? I took the fare for a number of reasons.......listed in no particular order, 1. I new that the driver concerned was probably looking for an out of town fare! On that particular night he would have had to wait forever.....so serve the bugger right. 2. I did not want to embarrass the lady passenger by kicking up a fuss, and 3. I suppose this was more than any other reason in the back of my mind..............What if I had dug my heels in, and refused the fare, because of the other driver - could I also have been done for refusing a fare? |

Happens all the time around here. What if the short journey was for a vulnerable person, or a lone female, and everybody turned the job down? IMHO these drivers should be reported and dealt with severely. |

Unless the passenger is in some state (drunk, been sick, muddy) that is the only reason you shouldn't let some One in your car, I am a ph and the only time I send hires back is for any of the reasons above or if I receive the hire and it is because the drivers in the next plot have sent it back and then I get it and it is a 10 minute drive to the pick up, |

The answer to your question can be found in the TPCA section 53. The comments above are correct in that a HC driver can refuse to take a passenger if there is a reasonable excuse for doing so. Refusing short fares is unfair to other drivers. The only time this may be justified might be if the passenger was well known locally to be a person who did not pay or had previously evaded fares by running off. You would need to support this justification with facts. |

You are in the right but the LO will probably do nowt about it it is a major issue on our rank and i have a number of drivers who won't talk to me because I have tried to report them for it BUT our LO will NOT investigate any complaint that originates from a driver it has to come from a customer |
